Travel information always on track and on time for East Yorkshire Motor Services (EYMS)

Background

EYMS is an award winning bus company, formed in 1926, that currently runs over 300 buses and coaches throughout Hull, East Yorkshire and the North Yorkshire coast. The firm also runs coach holidays and day trips and hires out coaches and vintage buses.

The Codebase team have been working for EYMS for more than 10 years and has designed and built two version of their website with the most recent edition launched in 2014

The site needs to present real time information for bus users, including timetable information, timetable changes, up to the minute schedule amends accounting for weather or accidents on the roads as well as general travel assistance information.

With ever increasing mobile device use, and with many people away from their homes requiring bus information, it is imperative that the design and function is multi platform and mobile friendly in particular.

The Process

Codebase designed a fully responsive site that accommodates the increased uptake in mobile usage and site visits from users on the move. The new site has a prominent Codebase designed feature that allows EYMS Tweets to appear immediately on the front page, ensuring vital up to the minute information and changes in schedule are prominent, without requiring repeat input by the marketing team.

The Codebase team also designed a way to enable the EYMS team to simply upload their latest timetables directly onto the website by taking a direct feed from their internal system. This again saves time and reformatting of vital, timely information.

To ensure bus users have real time information at their fingertips, the team devised ‘Live Tracking’. ‘Live Tracking’ allows users to find their nearest bus stops (via postcode), and using a GPS system counts down time until their specified bus arrives. Codebase worked with EYMS’s internal systems and processes to build the front end interface to deliver this innovative information tool.

The Result

Thousands of bus users visit and use the EYMS website everyday and are able to find up to the minute information. The team are delighted with the areas that they can content manage and particularly with the real time systems such as the Live Tracking and Tweets to the Homepage, that enable them to alert customers immediately of any changes, delays or cancellations. This smooth delivery of vital information ensures in the know travel for customers resulting in satisfied customer feedback and hassle free communication for the EYMS marketing team.
